Nothing is more frustrating than putting time into creating content, showing up on social media, working to ensure your captions are just right... just to hear crickets.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

When I was first building my business and establishing my career online, standing out from the crowd for merit wasn’t easy.

After all, you can’t just post a bikini picture with a cocktail and pretty sunset and consider that a strategy. Plus there’s a timing thing that has to happen with every business. You want to test the waters and prove the concept. No social media strategy can really dampen that test result.

Building a personal brand, creating authority in any space, and building an engaged audience around that is an important part of growing your business.

Let’s go through some key points you need to consider as you brave the world of social media for building your business.

  1. The number of social media followers has nothing to do with how much money you will make. There are so many people on social media with millions of followers making no money. In fact, I’ve even seen videos where famous YouTubers couldn’t even work at their local Starbucks because people would recognize them yet still couldn’t sell enough to quit their day job. You need to be thinking about building an audience of people who really want and value what you have to offer.

  2. Make sure that what you post is relevant to your business yet still engaging and connective to your audience. Posting content that's filled with cute puppies or last night's dinner plate has nothing to do with your business unless you all puppies or have a cookbook coming out. Plus posting content that is not related to your business will not cultivate an audience that's interested in what you have to offer. Get focused on what does resonate with people who need your service or aligns with your business. If you are an artist, post about your art and process. If you make jewelry, video yourself making jewelry. Demonstrate your craft in an engaging way and still with it. Consistency is very important.

  3. Have a strategy: Randomly posting is never going to get you anywhere. You always need to post with a plan. In fact, the best accounts are typically designed weekly and even monthly to stay on theme and keep the audience really entertained. Youtube is also a very planned content channel. Think of your social media pages like a television network and your audience like they are dedicated followers of a favorite program. Deliver your content consistently, with purpose and on time. It changes everything.

  4. Work at converting your audience to paying customers. You’ve got to have a plan of action for conversions. It’s one thing to attract the right audience to your products, but it’s another ball game to understand how to sell those products. Sales require a combination of understanding what your audience wants from you and how to charge the right rate for that value.

  5. Take a step back and look at your account as an unbiased new visitor. Ask yourself.. What is this page about? What value does it bring? Is anyone responding to it and how are they responding? Who is my competition and what are their most popular and engaging posts? What can I learn from more engaged pages? How can I make my page more clear and bring value to connect with my audience?

Remember the secret of any social media page, is in bringing value to those who show up for you. Once you fill that need, then your growth will take care of itself. Take care of those who do value you and focus on those relationships rather than the vanity numbers or you’ll lose all that you gain and never be able to successfully build a sustainable career and business.
