Songwriting and Music…

My life pretty much revolves around music. If I’m not listening to it then I’m creating it and striving to get better and better at that. Many of my life choices have been greatly influenced by this need to listen and create.

How important is it to be authentic with lyrics?

Extremely important! I try to be as honest and personal as I can when writing them so that hopefully someone out there will really connect with the sentiments and feel a little less lonely.

Why do you make music?

It’s something our band feels compelled to do because music is very fulfilling for us. For me personally, creating music has also been a coping mechanism for when life gets overwhelming. It’s an outlet for all the complex feelings inside my heart.

Here are 10 tips to help you become a better songwriter.

  1. Practice. Songwriters are always writing. That’s how you get better at your craft. Even when you have to set one song aside, don’t stop writing.

  2. Co-create : sometimes its great to have a little push in order to get something done. You’ll also get great ideas from a co-writer so give it a chance.

  3. Confidence: We all struggle with second guessing ourselves. Stay focused and believe in yourself.

  4. Re-work existing work. Even if you revisit something 10 years down the road you never know when that gem is going to appear. Keep your channels open and never say never.

  5. Have an open mind. Allow different influences and ideas to flow. Inspiration comes in many forms so let it take you down different paths.

  6. Avoid overthinking. Try not to compare yourself to anyone. It’s great to have influences and you should always strive to improve your skills but keep an open mind when you are looking at your work. An open perspective could be just what you need to discover your own style.

  7. Ask for honest feedback : Keep great people that you trust on your side line so when you need to talk it out, you’ve got someone who gets you to chat about ideas.

  8. Mix it up: Never box yourself in to one style. Let it flow and allows your roots to take center stage.

  9. Avoid excuses: Try to stay focused. It can’t be forced but know yourself enough to be able to get into the zone when you need too.

  10. Take breaks when it’s not coming : We all need to clear our heads. Get to understand what does this for you and take the time you need so your not forcing creativity. That’s no fun.
