Using Twitter Hashtags

Are you using hashtags to become a part of a larger conversation?

A hashtag is the wonder of the past decade. It was born to address the need to organize and make sense of the overwhelming social media buzz.

Today hashtags are used to brand and draw attention to people, ideas and events while making it easy for you to locate and become a part of a topic of discussion. A hashtag—written with a # symbol—is used to index keywords or topics on Twitter. This function was created on Twitter, and allows people to easily follow topics they are interested in.

So how do you use them?

Here's my version of cliff notes for learning how to use hashtags the quick and easy way.

TWITTER

Clicking or tapping on a hashtagged word in any message shows you other Tweets that include that hashtag.

Hashtags can be included anywhere in a Tweet.

Twitter hashtags don't support special characters like +, !, $, %, -, ^, &, *, etc. They do support letters, numbers and _ (underscore).

There are no hashtag limits (length, number) as long as you keep your message within 140 characters of the tweet. I like to use no more than 1-3 if I want to place a tweet in a particular conversation for both post exposure and account exposure.

If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.

While Twitter hashtags are reported to increase engagement, the most efficient way to use them is through hosting and participating in Twitter chats. One tweet in a long lined discussion doesn't make much of an impact but several interactions (twitter chats) can really bring attention to your profile and draw your current followers into your conversations more often.

Type a hashtagged keyword in the search bar to discover content and accounts based on your interests.

TIP:

Participating in an event, holiday, conference, festival or national vibe ( #Seeher ) hashtag is usually the best to join because they tend to trend to larger audiences and are heavily advertised.

Also joining in on the right event or vibe that runs parallel to your brand is always a smart idea. You current followers who joined because of your brand message will interact with you more and new people in your niche will find you.

Where can I find hashtag trends?

Trends are available on the Twitter for iOS app, the Twitter for Android app, and twitter.com.

On Twitter's mobile apps, you can find trends by simply tapping on the search icon   (Twitter for Android) or the Explore tab  under the Trending Now section (Twitter for iOS). When signed in to twitter.com on a desktop or laptop computer, trends are listed in many places, including the Home timeline, Notifications, search results, and profile pages.

How are trends determined?

Trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored for you based on who you follow, your interests, and your location. This algorithm identifies topics that are popular now, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help you discover the hottest emerging topics of discussion on Twitter.

MORE TIPS:

- Using an image in your tweets greatly improves engagement rates and helps to draw more attention to a tweet.

- Including a friends tag @JacquelineJax in a conversation will help to draw in friends to any conversation.

Get into some fun conversations today and remember to be the message with value, not a one word answer.
